Japanese automaker Toyota, posted 9.5 upsurges in the sales boosted by its Camry mid-sized car and Prius in the US market, while US manufacturers General Motors recorded 16.6 percent dip and Ford saw 19 percent drop in sales.

Luxury car maker Daimler Chrysler sales rose 3.2%, as Mercedes-Benz sales soared. The luxury brand saw its sales climb nearly 37% higher in January and other emerging Asian rival Honda’s sales mounted by 2.4 per cent and Nissan’s numbers were up 8.9 per cent.

Toyota’s car sales were up 13.1 percent in January, while truck sales rose 5 percent. Toyota said sales, which include the Toyota and Lexus brands, were the best ever for January. Sales of its Camry midsize car rose 14.7 percent, to 31,461, while its hybrid Prius and RAV4 compact sport-utility vehicle also gained.

The Japanese car firm’s strength continues as it is introducing fuel efficient vehicles compare to gas gulfing sports utility vehicles and roaring pick up trucks.

Increasing competitions from the efficient Asian competitors and slid in the sale in U.S. and Europe Ford has plans to close 16 factories in North America and cut 45,000 jobs.
