A few years back I happened to read Robert T Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad that left me mightily impressed and I dare say changed the way I looked at being ‘really successful’. There he wrote about how to get out of the rat race and make a fortune using simple calculations and mind.
However, in the book, he cautions that there would inevitably be failures in ventures. The trick lies in how you can hold yourself through such losses. He compares losses with heartbreaks and says that there isn’t a single investor whose investment didn’t work out as there isn’t a single lover whose heart wasn’t broken. He argued in favour of having some guts and taking risks without being disheartened at losses. I don’t remember exactly when Robert came out with his magnificent book. My guess is that it was just around the first Gulf War in the early 90s.
Now, another great success story Felix Dennis - the publishing tycoon has come out with a guide on how to become a multi-multi millionaire. He doesn’t hesitate to say that being rich will solve many problems, including enhancing your sex life. The man knows what he says and I dare say that of all things in life, money, and loads of it is the gateway to happiness.
Anyway, without further ado, let’s see what he has for the wannabe millionaires like me to say :-)
If you are unwilling to fail, sometimes publicly, and even catastrophically, you stand little chance of ever getting rich.
• If you care what the neighbours think, you will never get rich.
• If you cannot bear the thought of causing worry to your family, spouse or lover while you plough a lonely, dangerous road rather than taking the safe option of a regular job, you will never get rich.
• If you have artistic inclinations and fear that the search for wealth will coarsen such talents, you will never get rich. (Because your fear, in this instance, is well justified.)
• If you are not prepared to work longer hours than almost anyone you know, despite the jibes of colleagues and friends, you are unlikely to get rich.
• If you cannot convince yourself that you are ‘good enough’ to be rich, you will never get rich.
• If you cannot treat your quest to get rich as a game, you will never be rich.
• If you cannot face up to your fear of failure, you will never be rich.
Hmmm... it surely asks for some compromises and sacrifices. But then, it is not everyone’s cup of tea to be able to make sacrifices. Only the ones with a large heart and not afraid to try out a few things involving risks will eventually. Most of the self-made billionaires became so that way, isn’t it?
