A few days back I had reported about the labor rights violation in China at KFC and McDonald’s outlets and now adding on to it after these reports surfaced in the media both the companies have now given a nod to union branches in China. Amazingly a probe undertaken by Shanghai labor officials gave a clean chit to companies in the labor violation case. McDonald’s will be setting up unions in a phased manner.
As of now there are no reports with regards to establishment of any union branches in both the companies. As per the law in China it is at the discretion of an employee to join a union or not. All this happened as a result after reports that surfaced last month in which both the companies were found to be indulging in labor right violations. Both the companies had maintained that they were not involved in any violation and were following the law.
It seems that political pressure has given a clean chit to both the companies and this is just the tip of the iceberg. A number of violations take place each day in China and most of them go unreported due to the communist regime in China. Economic growth at the cost people is certainly not justified.
