Mattel has now unveiled a site called BarbieGirls.com where children can log on and use their creativity for creating virtual characters and even create customized clothes. The company also has plans for unveiling a Barbie inspired handheld MP3 music player for increasing interaction with the website and unlocking further content.
The company is adopting this strategy in order to maintain the interest of children in Barbie. This is another effort from a popular toy brand to increase its interaction with children with the aid of internet and maintain interest in its dolls which are facing competition from various form of online entertainment. The company is claiming that it is the first global online virtual world aimed at girls. This step is being seen as a strategy to fight competition from Bratz dolls.
