Ok, this is no prank. I was wondering whether it would be possible to modify a reasonably hi-end mobile like the Nokia 6600 and integrate a flash memory drive and boost its storage manifolds. Flash drives are cheap, more resistant to shocks and manhandling. So will it take a Herculean effort to really modify a common cell with a fairly large storage capacity?
The much publicized N91 of the Nokia N Series phones comes with an inbuilt 4GB storage capacity. Conventional fixed drives make the phone bulky. Besides, your cell-phone is one of those things you don’t take much notice of unless you misplace it. You fling in on your bed, toss it on your desk and they drop every now and then. For conventional drives, these small shocks can be fatal. Every time it bears shock, it loses stability, capacity and what not. Unfortunately, a cell-phone is not something that you can really take very good care of all the time. With flash drive inside, this thing can be taken care of. Besides, flash drives cost a fraction of normal hard drives, don’t they?
Coming back to the idea of modifying an existing phone, like your super-phone of yesteryears - the Nokia 6600. I have a friend who once told me that he tried using a 1GB memory card with the handset and it simply froze. It was too much for the ‘internals’. It just couldn’t handle it.
I have seen mods of all kinds here on the Internet. Gaming mods, console mods, car mods, motorcycle mods, gun mods and what not. So far I haven’t seen anyone modifying a cell-phone integrating a flash memory inside it. Is that so difficult? Just imagine how useful it would be should such a mod be successful. I am sure you would agree.
I guess the talented guys in Make magazine or Instructables, or for that matter the freelancing modifiers will take the cue from here and have something to show day after tomorrow. ;-)
Mobile with Flash Memory coming day after!
