We get so lost with the adventures of the Troika of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft that we forget the two other champions, Amazon and Ebay(I will talk about eBay in another post).
Though Amazon might have shown a drop in its earnings, it does possess a genuine streak of innovation. Consider A9, Mechanical Turk or its way early decision to release its APIs.
So it has come as no surprise in the news that it is going to create its own Adsense-like program. Going by the number of its affiliates, you might be forgiven to think that this one will score big. But halt for a second and listen to what Darren at Problogger has to say,
This could be difficult for them to do as many (if not most) of their Affiliates would currently be running AdSense or YPN ads and need to remove these current ads in order to beta test Amazon’s offering (as AdSense and YPN no not allow contextual ads on the same site page).
Hmm...

Although A9 is innovative, it has failed miserably as a competitor to Google. The usage just isn’t there (innovation without users doesn’t help the bottom line). And now that Udi is leaving and going to Google, A9 is in even more trouble. At the end of the day, this Amazon ”AmSense” product will suceed or fail based on whether the eCPM (earnings per thousand impressions) is better than that of AdSense. I posted on this tonight on my blog, if anyone cares to give me some comments: http://blogation.blogspot.com/2006/02/adios-adsense.html
