Stefanie Olsen asks what people at Yahoo and Google must be mulling every day:
Can a giant Internet portal like Yahoo or Google also create original content that people want to read or watch? Or are the portals destined to be like cable television carriers: Powerful content aggregators who dabble in their own stuff but are ultimately best at providing a platform for other people’s material?
Yahoo has set its hopes on Yahoo Games, Yahoo Games and lately, on Yahoo Music which has some original content and in News where it famously hired Kevin Sites to report from Iraq. In all these areas Yahoo is way behind the lead players.
What about Google?
Though portalhood is not its objective, I will say it again: Google should get some content. Maybe Gannett.
