Pharmacia and Upjohn Company has admitted that it had offered kickback to a pharmacy benefit manager and as a result was slapped a criminal fine worth $19.68 million. As a part of the sentence the company has been excluded from participation in federal health care programs permanently. The responsibility of a pharmacy benefit manager is to recommend drugs to health plans and it is has been proved that pharmacy benefit manager was paid to the tune of $12.3 million.
As a result of this deal the company was expected to gain benefits which would have been much more than the kickback paid. Prosecutors had told earlier this month that Pharmacia would plead guilty to the charge, pay up the fine and face permanent expulsion from federal health care programs. Pfizer has refused to comment on this issue but probably they will suffer a lot as a result of this scandal.
