The Web is the new operating system now. Check out this classic essay. Microsoft knows this but is painfully slow to respond to all this rapid change. I guess the guys at Redmond have become thick-skinned from all that easy money from all that desktop and server software.
1. Microsoft has no all-device strategy. Google is now coming preinstalled in Opera mobile browser, a brand of USB drives, on new Motorola phones.
2. It is always late. The days of being the undisputed lord of the PC-Dom will soon be gone. Apple has launched Video iPod way back in 2005. It is now that Microsoft is launching a music service.
3. Soon Firefox will touch that magical double-digit number ( % of the PC browser market).
4. The present king of Online Media, Yahoo is offering services that allow you to access various types of information without using your browser.
5. George Colony of Forrester Research has a term for this phenomenon of people accessing the internet without using the Browser - the X- internet. The X-internet is growing like anything. What is Microsoft doing about that apart from silly PR spins?
6. Soon we will see the marriage of RSS + IM + E Mail + Video RSS + Audio RSS and much else. All of these will be available across multiple platforms. Is Microsoft ready?
7. Online Office applications like Writely and those from 37signals.
7 Reasons Why Microsoft Is In Trouble

Who the hell cares if Softie loses market share to Mozilla. Last time I checked nobody was making money off of the browsers. The only one who’s ever done anything smart with a browser has been AOL who had the sense to donate it to the open source community and take the tax write off. Someone is still going to have to write the operating software for these computers and as hot as the iPod might be, I just don’t see consumers abandoning the PC. There is something familar and nice about knowing that whatever job you go to or whatever service that comes out will be compatible with MSFT. All I ever hear is Mac users bitch about how TiVo doesn’t support them or how Safari doesn’t show up right, well it’s a free country, why don’t they just do what the other 95% does and surrender to our overlords instead of paying homage to an ego maniac like Jobs. Until Google can sucessfully attack MSFT where they make their billions, they’ll never be able to make a dent in the company. Softie still has enough cash to buy up any company that has anything worthwhile to offer.
