Google India

India might be basking in IT glory these days and showcasing the IT talents its young population has to offer the world. Almost all big names in the software industry right from Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Oracle etc has droves of Indians working in departments requiring the top skills. Not only that, many Indians have made it to the top brass of these companies. Besides, Indian IT companies themselves are becoming major powerhouses like Infosys and Wipro.

However, that is just one side of the story. The other side is Google is finding it very difficult to find candidates with the right skills in India.

IT engineers may be dime-a-dozen in India, but internet search engine leader Google is having a hard time finding candidates with the right skill sets in the country. Kavitark Ram Shriram, early investor and founder-director of Google has revealed that Google is finding it harder to hire certain talents in India than other countries.

Speaking in a conference titled ‘Investing India’ in San Francisco, Shriram said;

I know first hand that we have had a bit more of a challenge trying to hire engineers for Google in Bangalore compared to the other parts of the world.

This despite that it has a prominent link ‘We’re Hiring in Google India homepage and promises to provide ‘a fun atmosphere’ to work in and ‘make dreams a reality’ along with unparalleled freebies thrown in to lure talent.

However, Google India declined to comment on Shriram’s speech and said that it was ‘very pleased’ with the talent it was able to attract in India.

If at all, that were the case, why would someone like Kavitark Ram Shriram say such a thing? Good point to think upon. Maybe Google will come up with a clearer answer.
