While Google is the smartest (and biggest) organizer of the world’s information, Yahoo is the smartest Media company. Though Google’s founders may say they do not want to become a portal, the pressure on them is on. Consider the recent AFP case: The company seeks to bar Google News from using AFP’s material in the Google news site.
It may prompt Google to move from ‘Beta’ phase to regular news provider - do not be surprised if google decides to buy unique news site, Digg.
Meanwhile, competitor Yahoo has made smart media moves. Moreover, Yahoo has made significant march over Google in that much-hyped Web2.0 arena.Consider its recent Web2.0 moves:
1. It has bought Photo-sharing Service Flickr: Gets content and community.
2. It has launched a Web2.0 based Social Search service My Web.
3. And now, to bolster its MyWeb service, it has bought Del.icio.us: it will considerably boost its search capabilities, courtesy the ‘wisdom of crowds’ of del.icio.us. Buying del.icio.us also gives it an edge over Google News.
In fact, Yahoo’s recent Acquisitions merits a roundup, similar to the one Hellocompany did on Google.
So, the big question is: When will Google bite the bullet and finally get some Content-based Service (Digg is somewhere near that)? The Digg service is popular - it already has spawned clones, like a Latino Digg and A Chinese Digg. There was also news about a politics-only digg.
Come on, Google. Get some content.
